A Mysterious Disappearance
Thirty years ago, Bhaskar Shetty left India for Saudi Arabia with nothing but ambition and grit. He returned a wealthy man, only to meet a gruesome end in his own home near Udupi. On July 28, he vanished without a trace. The shocking revelation that followed sent ripples through the town: Shetty had been murdered by his own wife and son, his body incinerated in a homa kunda—a sacred fire pit traditionally used for rituals—with the assistance of a priest.

A Devout Businessman
The story of Bhaskar Shetty’s rise was the stuff of legend. Fondly known as Bhaskaranna, he was deeply religious, a man who believed his success was owed to divine grace. His grand mansion, named ‘Eshwari’ in honor of the goddess he worshipped, stood proudly by the bustling Udupi-Manipal road. Yet, despite his devout exterior, whispers of turmoil within the family painted a starkly different picture.

Fractured Family Ties
Bhaskar Shetty, 52, had long lived apart from his wife Rajeshwari, 45, and son Navneeth, 20. He spent his nights at the hotel he owned, Durga International, and only visited Eshwari for his daily prayers. Friends observed his growing withdrawal and despair in recent months, a change attributed to ongoing family disputes. It was rumored that Rajeshwari and Navneeth had assaulted him at his hotel in a fit of rage.

The Motive: A Fortune at Stake
The motive? Shetty’s vast fortune, estimated at around ₹300 crore. Investigators believe his decision to disinherit his wife and son in favor of his mother and brother was the final straw that led to the chilling plot to end his life.
The Breaking Point
Those close to the family recall the moment the cracks deepened: Shetty had grown suspicious of Rajeshwari’s management of the hotel finances and accused her of cooking the books. A heated confrontation followed, during which Rajeshwari allegedly tried to destroy incriminating evidence. When Shetty intervened, Navneeth allegedly turned violent. That day, Shetty is said to have severed ties with them completely.

Stranded and Frustrated
Adding to his woes, Shetty found himself stranded in Udupi, unable to locate his passport and increasingly frustrated with being cut off from his thriving business in Saudi Arabia.
A Humble Beginning
Friends remember Shetty as a self-made man, raised in poverty by his parents, Gulabi and Sheenappa Shetty. They recall his humble beginnings—from assisting at his father’s small eatery to working as a mechanic in Mumbai before an overseas opportunity changed his life. Once in Saudi Arabia, he established a successful chain of six supermarkets and extended his generosity to his extended family and community.

A Sinister Influence
But prosperity did not bring happiness. In the last few years, Shetty grew wary of his wife’s closeness with a young priest-astrologer, Niranjan Bhat. The 26-year-old, now under arrest, allegedly wielded a sinister influence over Rajeshwari. As their relationship deepened, Bhat’s lifestyle transformed dramatically—from driving luxurious cars to flaunting a lavish lifestyle in Udupi. Authorities suspect it was Bhat who masterminded the gruesome disposal of Shetty’s body, using his homa kunda in Nandalike village to burn the remains and later discarding the ashes in a nearby river.
