Discovery Along National Highway 31
The recovery occurred on Wednesday morning along the busy transit stretch between the Shahpur toll plaza and Iniyar. Pedestrians and local commuters along the service lanes of National Highway 31 noticed a foul odor rising from the highway embankment.
Upon scanning the roadside slope, locals observed clothing partially concealed beneath roadside shrubs roughly 20 to 30 feet down the embankment. Stepping into the ravine, they discovered the motionless body of a woman lying face-down in the undergrowth.
The news spread rapidly among agricultural settlements along the highway, drawing crowds to the overpass. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, local residents alerted the Lakho Police Station. Law enforcement units secured the site with yellow cordons to protect physical evidence, such as tire marks, drag trails, and discarded objects, from contamination.
Senior police leadership, including Sadar-1 DSP Imran Ahmad, reached the location to oversee preliminary investigations, accompanied by a dedicated team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
Physical Evidence: Dress, Wounds, and the “Preeti” Tattoo
During the initial on-site examination, investigators and forensic technicians noted several critical details:
- Attire and Demographics: The victim was dressed in a salwar-kameez, typical of attire worn across rural and semi-urban North India. Her age was estimated by medical officers to be between 28 and 30 years.
- Permanent Inscription: On one hand, investigators found a clearly legible tattoo (godhna) spelling out the Hindi name “Preeti”. In eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, permanent name-etching remains a common social custom, providing police with a vital clue for identifying the victim.
- Physical Trauma: Despite visible tissue decomposition, officers observed distinct injury marks on her other hand and arm, suggesting potential defensive struggles prior to death.
- Estimated Time of Death: The post-mortem signs and active insect activity indicate that the victim died approximately 48 to 72 hours prior to her discovery on Wednesday.
Forensic specialists examined the surrounding soil, checked for disrupted flora indicating whether she was dragged down the embankment, and searched the ravine for personal belongings such as purses, footwear, or identity documentation.

A Disturbing Sequence: Three Women Found Dead in Eight Days
The discovery along NH-31 has heightened alarm across Begusarai because it follows two similar incidents in the preceding week:
1. Adharpur Embankment Incident (September 8)
On September 8, farmers walking near the Adharpur river embankment (bandh), within the jurisdiction of the Teghra Police Station, spotted the abandoned body of an unidentified young woman. Field observations suggested she had been killed elsewhere before her body was dumped under cover of darkness.
2. Pidholi Panchayat Embankment Incident (September 15)
On September 15, residents in Pidholi Panchayat, also within the Teghra police jurisdiction, uncovered the corpse of a 22-year-old woman along another river embankment. Like the previous case, local residents could not identify her, raising concerns that secluded embankments were deliberately being chosen as secondary disposal sites.
3. Lakho NH-31 Embankment Discovery (September 16)
Less than twenty-four hours after the Pidholi discovery, local residents in Lakho found the body bearing the “Preeti” tattoo discarded along National Highway 31.
Chronological Overview of Recent Discoveries in Begusarai
- September 8: Body of an unidentified woman recovered near the Adharpur embankment in Teghra; foul play suspected.
- September 15: Body of an unidentified 22-year-old woman found abandoned on an embankment in Pidholi Panchayat, Teghra.
- September 16 (Morning): Severe odor alerts villagers along NH-31; decomposing body of a 28-to-30-year-old woman discovered in bushes.

Law Enforcement Strategy and Next Steps
Briefing journalists at the crime scene, Sadar-1 DSP Imran Ahmad explained that the immediate operational objective is establishing the victim’s identity.
According to DSP Ahmad, the condition of the remains suggests the death occurred two to three days prior. Investigators are examining whether the homicide was committed directly inside the ravine along NH-31 or if the victim was killed in another district or town before her body was transported by vehicle and thrown down the highway embankment.
Authorities have shared photographs of the “Preeti” tattoo and attire across police wireless networks, social media groups, and crime record branches in adjoining districts such as Samastipur, Khagaria, Munger, and Patna. Officers are cross-referencing all recent missing person complaints filed over the past two weeks involving adult women.
Furthermore, police are reviewing CCTV camera feeds from the Shahpur toll plaza and private commercial outlets along NH-31 to detect any suspicious vehicular stops during late-night hours over the preceding 72 hours.
