Ambush in Mohmand District
The attack occurred in the rugged border district of Mohmand, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along the Pakistan–Afghanistan frontier. According to local police official Ayaz Khan, the officers were travelling toward a nearby village to take up security posts and escort health teams going door to door when they were ambushed.
Armed assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on the patrol before speeding away into difficult terrain. Two officers died from gunshot wounds at the scene, while a third wounded constable was moved to a nearby medical facility for emergency trauma treatment. The polio vaccination workers themselves were unharmed.
No militant faction claimed immediate responsibility. However, suspicion heavily surrounds the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and regional affiliate networks that frequently target state security details and healthcare workers.

Wider Threat to Pakistan’s Polio Eradication Drive
The killing coincides with the launch of a major nationwide anti-polio drive aimed at administering oral drops to approximately 24 million children. Along with neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistan remains one of only two countries where wild poliovirus transmission has never been permanently stopped.
Polio vaccination teams and their armed escorts have faced continuous violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Militant groups frequently propagate false conspiracy claims alleging that the drops are part of an intelligence plot or designed to cause infertility.
The security situation in the northwest remains fraught: just one day prior to the Mohmand shooting, suspected militants abducted four healthcare workers carrying out vaccination duties in Tank district, drawing widespread condemnation from provincial authorities who called for emergency recovery operations.
